Fall Friday Fun For You -- And Some Words of Wisdom, Too!

Didn't I promise a whole host of Fall Holiday Celebrations this year?

I had almost forgotten.

Good thing I happened to be driving past our local fire station the other night and noticed the gala festivities going on for

National Fire Prevention Week!

While I was in a hurry and unable to stop and try on fire fighter clothes, pretend to drive a fire engine, or even get a hot dog and balloon,

I did vow to give a Small Works "shout out" to Smokey the Bear.

I don't remember a lot about kindergarten
(Ah, Mrs. Hall! She's probably 100 years old now . . .)

but I do remember sitting "indian style"
[I'm almost positive we don't say "indian style" in schools today]
and singing the "Smokey the Bear Song."

"Smokey the Bear, Smokey the Bear!
Prowlin' and a growlin' and a sniffin' the air.

He can find a fire,
before it starts to flame --
that's why they call him 'Smokey'
and that's how he got his name!"

The comic book website "Fortress of Baileytude" (where I found this image) also yielded this little bit of gold:

"This is quite possibly the most awesome cover ever. . . . I mean this is a Smokey I can get behind. This is a Smokey that can kick a little a##. It seems like Mr. The Bear is thinking, 'Oh yeah? You wolves think you can come into my house and start some $%^& with me and my kid? I don’t @#$%ing think so. Get in the tree, Junior. Daddy has to take care of a little business.'

Smokey the Bear will freaking cut you. I know this now."

Best laugh I've had this week.

Who knew National Fire Prevention Week
could be so much fun?
I owe October an apology.

And who doesn't remember the sweet release of the fire drill buzzer?

An unexpected trip outside AND a serendipitous bit of excitement (what if this is really THE ONE??) -- the most you can hope for during a math test.

Sometimes I wish that buzzer would go off at my house when I'm doing things I don't want to do.

While we're at it, I wanted to share a few additional safety tips with you, because there are a lot of ways to ruin your weekend besides burning your house down (and Smokey can't be everywhere -- he's just one bear, after all).

There you have it --
Smokey, We Salute You!

Have a safe and happy weekend!

Seriously -- why hasn't anyone thought of this before now? I can think of a whole lot of household situations where a fire drill would come in handy. And we probably need an easily concealed remote control device to set it off at just the right times. Maybe THAT'S the new product I've been looking for . . .?

We do not say "indian style" anymore (which is what I remember in elementary school). We now say "criss-cross applesauce." At least, that's what I said at the school I was just at.

And, fire drills, while awesome when you are a child, are not so awesome when you are the teacher trying to control the excited kids. Haha.

I want to know why Smokey doesn't come change the battery in my smoke alarms when they get a low battery.

I'm wayyyy too short to change them even standing on a chair.

Good question, VO -- and especially since we've now discovered that Smokey is totally RIPPED and should be able to accomplish any household task with ease, all while looking good in a pair of jeans! Who knew?

I'm thinking Smokey might be moonlighting as a Chippendale dancer. He's probably too tired to do household chores from all the firefighting and dancing business.
